America the
beautiful, America the free. America: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit to
Scapegoat. Can't be happiness. Cannot be the freedom of the American dream
because if that is the case America doesn't give our children the opportunity
for that mantra. Why would I say such a harsh thing? Well let's open the closet
that America hides their skeletons.
I once heard the
term "School shootings are just as American as Apple Pie." And white people you need a slice of that and
humble pie. Since Columbine, school shootings have become so apart of America's
genetic makeup that it is almost desensitized. This past Tuesday, Feb
14th Nikolas Cruz opened fire on his
fellow peers killing at least 17 and
injuring many more. We grieve, we send virtual prayers, we all become
journalists, experts on what laws need to be put in place, then we ignore,
floss, repeat and follow steps verbatim until the next time it happens. What are we going to do about it?... Well
when I say we, I really don't mean people of color, you know, we are too busy
grooming OUR children to not to run from the police, not wearing a dark clothed
hoodie after dusk, not resisting, not buying
our children toy guns while you are allowing your children to have access and
use real ones. We have traded Duck Hunt for actual moving targets.
We have our
government more concerned with SNAP benefits than children's school safety. So
much so that they are willing to shut down Congress over it and other topics.
And before you get upset lets actually uncover a few statistics you know ACTUAL
facts.
The majority of
school shootings are carried out by White men. Plain and Simple. We can wrap a
bow around it. We can hug it, read bedtime stories to it but at the end of the
day it is the truth and it is YOUR fault. Labeling these thugs as
"mentally ill" allows you to sleep better at night. Knowing that a
regular person who moves through this world with just the same entitlement as
you can just one day do this scares the living shit out of you. But if you put
"mentally ill; troubled" paired with a sad news segment about his
past transgressions he will somehow be shown mercy. 17 people lost their lives, they deserve a
news coverage, not Nickolas. You are related to, play golf with send your children
to the schools with those who know the real people that can make some change in
this great nation that your forefathers killed
fought for. Let's stop the notion that the NRA needs to just make stricter laws
on gun control and start having conversations in your homes, in your
communities and with your children on what it means to keep their hands to
themselves. It takes more than just one conversation it also takes
acknowledgement that your sons have unchecked privilege to believe that they
can take the life of a living creature without any repercussions.
